First thing about English is that you cannot study English, in fact you cannot study any language. It all comes from Practice. Read the essay below... and see if it captures your attention.

The man sat in the darkness alone looking at the windows barred. His dull eyes gazing in to the light beyond the windows, He had only an hour left to be FINALLY FREE. The man was in his forties and was looking beyond the window with a smile. His red lips stretched almost up to his ear. He was excited and this scared out the guard standing outside the jail very much.

This man named Jhon had murdered more than 10 people for FUN and the guard was sure Jhon was not at all guilty for the murders because every day Jhon used to recall his murders in an excited and fun moment. He would explain how painfully he killed his victims and this would leave the guard in a state of fear and disgusted and sometimes he would have nightmares about John’s kills.

Jhon knew that he was going to be back in jail very soon. As time passed some people came to take him to the courts again. As usual his reply was that “He liked to kill that’s why he killed”. This is the reason why he had been in jail for 30 years!

He was FINALLY FREE. He whispered “Its time……Finally… … … … … …  Revenge”. The guard was walking past him, He stopped when he heard him.  He couldn’t believe what he was hearing at the same time he knew Jhon was going to murder someone and he decided to follow him.

Jhon had no idea that he was being followed and so he kept walking confidently through narrow pathways. The guard behind was wondering how Jhon knows the way after 30 years in jail. He kept following him into an old shed the guard followed him inside as well…….

That night there were sirens near the shed. Inside the shed they found the dead guard and Jhon smiling with his red lips….. and holding a knife dripping with blood on his other hand….  

                                

The ending is a cliffhanger which creates tension with the reader. A very good technique.

Alliteration

This is where the first letter of a word is repeated in words that follow. For example, the cold, clean, clear ice.

Assonance

This is where the same vowel sound is repeated but the consonants are different. For example, he passed her a sharp, dark glance, she shot a cool, foolish look across the room.

Colloquial language

This is language used in speech with an informal meaning. For example, chill, out of this world, take a rain check

Dialect

This is a version of a language spoken by people in a particular geographical area.
